A FLOCK of design briefs for University of Cumbria Graphic Design students

Posted on by

Over the past few months Julia Carefoot, Lead Creative and Charlie Haywood, Creative Director, have been busy working with the team at University of Cumbria Graphic Design (aka FLOCK) to set the Year 2 students a series of design briefs across different industries.

Take a look at some of the work this budding bunch of brilliant upcoming designers produced in response to the briefs…

Hot dessert sauce
To create a quirky, fun, and bold brand identity for a vegan, dessert chilli sauce range. A playful and unique twist on traditional dessert experiences for adventurous eaters and spice enthusiasts.

Waste water solution
Come up with a name and visual identity for ‘GetGo Recycling Solutions’ an eco-conscious and innovative brand with an innovative, carbon-negative waste water management solution.

Music club for kids
Develop a vibrant and approachable brand identity for a music club franchise aimed at 8 to 16 year olds, which appeals to both kids and their guardians alike.

Parkrun awareness campaign
Design an engaging awareness campaign that highlights the inclusivity, fun, and community-driven nature of parkrun. The campaign should encourage participation whether that’s walking, jogging, volunteering, or spectating.

An impressive response from the students
Since November 2024 the students have been busy working through their chosen brief and initial stages of the projects including disciplines such as branding, naming, positioning and creating awareness – cornerstones of design agency practice.

The first round of presentations was at our Hottie HQ in Lancaster, where the students took it in turns to talk through their strategy and concepts which were incredibly well delivered – and received. From the outset students were engaged, knowledgeable, and demonstrated a strong grasp of their projects – from interpreting the brief and conducting research to concept development.

Hotfoot’s Charlie commented, “It’s been so much fun working with the team from Cumbria. The students gave a brilliant round of presentations – they deserved the praise – and were very well drilled, so credit goes to the education team too.”

Programme Lead Billy Harkcom added, “We are very fortunate to work closely with talented agencies in the north west region to enrich our students’ design education with live briefs. The students were all very excited and happy with the whole experience – invaluable!”
